Being a parent, company owner, or working professional with many duties may make it simple to forget things. Have you ever attempted to remember the subtleties of a conference at work, a parent-teacher conference, a doctor’s appointment, a phone conversation, or a meeting?

Imagine having a personal secretary who was available around-the-clock to record, transcribe, and remind you of the vital things. Introducing the AI device designed to be this for you: the Plaud NotePin. After using it for a few weeks, I can state with confidence that it meets two of these needs and is a useful tool for some kinds of individuals.

A straightforward design with a clear objective

A pill-shaped variant of the wallet-shaped Plaud Note, the Plaud NotePin attaches to the back of your iPhone using MagSafe. Reviews of the company’s initial AI product were largely favorable yet critical. In many respects, the NotePin is a superb replacement, bringing the greatest features of the Note to a more approachable physical factor.

Perhaps you’re wondering why there is a Plaud NotePin. That’s just how I felt at first. I have Apple Intelligence Summaries on my iPhone 16 and a great recording software on my Google Pixel 9 Pro, so why buy this? Other AI gadgets, such as the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1, failed for the same reason. However, the NotePin is unique for one important reason: it can record your day and blends in with the surroundings.

The main body of the capsule is accompanied by a little back cover that conceals the charging pins and magnetically attaches. These use a USB-C connection to connect to a proprietary charging dock, which charges the Plaud NotePin. Additionally, there are two holes for connecting the necklace that is included with the accessory package or for a lanyard.

A tiny LED and an imperceptible capacitive button are located on the capsule’s front. Despite being quite bright, the LED might be challenging to see in glare or at a glance while driving. My main grievance is the button; it took me a few days to get used to it, and I still have trouble pressing it right each time. The NotePin now comes with an accessory kit by default, but Plaud intends to offer it separately. With the help of the kit, you may wear the Plaud NotePin around your wrist, lapel, or neck.

The Plaud NotePin may also be easily attached to your shirt using the magnetic cover on the back. I would still advise purchasing the NotePin even if Plaud decides to sell it without the companion package. If you intend to purchase the NotePin, the kit is essential since it makes it simple to make sure you always carry it with you.

Long battery life and almost faultless operation

plaud

The 290mAh battery of the Plaud NotePin is designed to provide up to 20 hours of continuous recording or 40 days of standby. Although these figures might appear excessive for a device with such a little capacity, the Plaud NotePin mostly meets these expectations. Most importantly, it accomplishes the main objective of enabling you to record for a whole day. For those who wish to record from dawn till night and work long hours, this makes it perfect.

On the other hand, you should anticipate paying off a single charge in two days if you have a more conventional nine-to-five employment. The NotePin takes around two hours to fully charge, but even fifteen minutes is sufficient to record for several hours.

The Plaud NotePin’s simplicity is its key. Instead of attempting to accomplish everything, it excels at a select few things. To prevent inadvertent activation during your daily motions, the button is challenging to press. Even in somewhat noisy settings, the twin microphones can pick up sound, but they probably won’t function effectively in noisy conditions. Additionally, while wearing the wrist strap with long sleeves, the sound may sound muffled.

Two transfer methods are available on the Plaud NotePin for offloading recordings to your phone’s app. Larger files may be sent at around ten times the speed when connecting directly to the Plaud NotePin over Wi-Fi, while smaller files can be transferred using Bluetooth at approximately 35–45 Kbps.

Using AI’s capability in a variety of ways

Although the Plaud NotePin’s technology is well-suited for its intended use, does it meet its AI objectives? Can the Plaud NotePin endure while others have failed, and is this the perfect use for AI? The latter issue has yet to be answered, but it undoubtedly meets its objectives and is a perfect use of AI for some individuals.

After you’ve recorded anything, you may create a mind map, transcript, or summary using the Plaud app. I gave the brief overview of this evaluation, which took a few minutes, and the mind map and summary features didn’t offer anything. But the lack of length was the cause of this.

I frequently make lengthy recordings covering a variety of subjects because I forget to stop recording on the NotePin. One of these recordings, which lasted three hours and forty-nine minutes, included a visit to my barber, a phone conversation with a partner on an event that was coming up, and appointments with electricians and plumbers at my mother’s house, which is undergoing renovations.

For this, the summary tool was especially useful, bringing up important takeaways, action items, and even checkboxes at the conclusion, along with AI-powered recommendations for any remaining areas that need clarification.

Short notes may be transcribed in a matter of seconds, and even the three-and-a-half-hour recording only took two and a half minutes to upload, transcribe, and provide a comprehensive summary. Regretfully, Plaud NotePin only offers 300 minutes of transcribing each month; the Pro edition, on the other hand, costs $79 annually and offers 1,200 minutes.

You will need to be more deliberate about what you record and transcribe since if you want to capture every aspect of your day, you will finish this in just five hours. This won’t be an issue for some folks. But I can envision businesses encountering limit problems nearly right away. Unfortunately, the Plaud NotePin is best suited for certain occupations.

Assume the role of a salesperson: It is probably not acceptable to record a meeting on your phone if you stroll into it. But it’s best to have a little device on your wrist that looks like a fitness tracker. The same goes for medical professionals who wish to utilize the Plaud NotePin to help with note-taking and memory. For example, a real estate agent who want to interact with prospective buyers while showcasing a house but can remember the specifics afterward.

The perfect driving buddy is the Plaud NotePin

These are but a few examples of how Plaud’s expert templates may be used. Although their value as templates is debatable, they do illustrate some of the applications in which the Plaud NotePin is the perfect AI device. It’s also prepared for an AI future that is constantly evolving thanks to the selection of two large language models (LLMs) — ChatGPT4o and Claude 3.5 beta — as well as further models in the works.

In the automobile is an additional use case that I would want to add to Plaud’s list. You can’t just pick up your phone and start recording when you get a fleeting idea while driving, which is something I frequently do. Yes, you may rely on your memory, or you can use the Plaud NotePin to record by pressing a button. The Plaud NotePin is the perfect driving buddy, so I’ve been doing that more and more.
