What Is the Air Quality Index?

The Air Quality Index (or the AQI) is a system used extensively by various government agencies for reporting air quality on a daily basis. It serves as an indicator that allows us to assess the air pollution of a specific place at any given point in time.

Usually used to warn the public when air pollution levels are too high, the AQI transforms complex air quality data from different sources into a single number (index value), nomenclature, and color. The AQI is divided into six categories and runs from 0 to 500. The higher the index value, the greater are the levels of air pollution and the associated health concerns.

Air Quality Index in India 

The overall air quality index of India and that of most of its major metropolitan cities is extremely poor. The National Air Quality Index (or the NAQI) was launched by The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, on 17 September 2014, with its primary mission to introduce a “culture of cleanliness” throughout India, especially in the urban areas.

The NAQI classifies air quality into six broad categories (Good, Satisfactory, Moderately Polluted, Poor, Very Poor, and Severe) based on the level of severity and the associated health risks. According to the index, some of the most polluted cities in India include Delhi, Noida, Kanpur, Mumbai, Kolkata, amongst others.

What Is Air Quality Monitoring? 

Air quality monitoring is a process involving the systematic assessment of the existing quality of air by measuring the quantity and types of certain pollutants in the surroundings. Some of the major air pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, particulate matter, amongst many others.

An indoor air quality monitor is a device that helps in assessing and interpreting air pollution levels at the individual level with relation to the ambient air quality standards.
