Apple’s impact has been among the most important in the transformational view of our life, with products ranging from the iPhone, iPad, and iPod having established or altered entire segments of the technology market, with perhaps the greatest influence being on the health world.

Apple’s AI Doctor

Smartwatches and fitness trackers were there long before the first Apple Watch, so Apple changed the health world with its entry. And as the Apple Watch and iPhone gained prominence, so did their benefits to keeping your health with the emergence of various new experiences developed by third-party app developers and equipment makers.

But Apple Health is more than just Apple Watch by itself, and a new report by Mark Gurman has suggested that Apple is working on a new AI-driven Doctor as part of the revamped Apple Health. Such a thing would revolutionize your health.

Integrations with every third-party

How do you track your health condition? I use an Apple Watch for a million things, but I have a Fitbit as well. Also, I use a Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor for blood sugar tracking and, together with the Oura Ring or RingConn Gen 2, these also sync data to Apple Health.

Then, there are the integrations with your medical chart provider, which has remained Apple Health’s utmost strength. U.S.-based in availability but with global limitations, it brings all health data from your medical records directly into the Health app of your iPhone.

Since I had a heart attack four years ago, I have been working with an Apple Watch and Apple Health to maintain my health. The integration with your health provider and pulling and displaying your conditions, test results, and medications means the two can represent Apple Health- a single source of truth for a more holistic picture of your health.

Except for a few Android-targeted brands, almost all health products are compatible with Apple Health. A number of the best scales can sync your most recent weight reading straight to Apple Health, and CGMs, other fitness trackers, smart rings, and medical devices all send additional valuable information to the health record stored on your iPhone.

More accurate than your doctor

AI Doctor

AI will go through all walks of life, but the integration and far reach of Apple Health indicate a unique flaw in the healthcare system as it is now. My heart attack was the wake-up call that the basic problem with the universal method by which doctors collect patient data is the absence of enough context.

If you’ve gained weight since your last visit, your doctor will not pursue that line too deeply. He/she might just tell you to try to lose some weight. However, the ability to weigh you over a period of months will enable your doctors to identify any possible issues early.

Blood pressure cuffs will be the same, as will any cardiac measurement devices like Kardia Mobile 6-Lead Portable EKG and CGMs. The two largest manufacturers of CGMs give the doctors access to this information on blood sugars, which most endos out there are using anyway, who prescribe CGMs to their patients.

There is way more information than your doctor does, but more importantly, it is accurate and relevant. Something like the Withings Body Scan scale tracks much more than just additional weight, as it also performs EKGs and body scans and delves into granular detail of several main health indicators. Those can be fed into your iPhone and made available to the AI.

Integration is key

Was key to making Apple Watch and Apple Health valuable was Apple’s ability to convince medical institutions and governmental bodies to integrate technology in the field of medicine.

In established medical professions, there are systems and procedures requiring a huge amount of resources for their supervision, but the likes of Apple — along with Samsung and Google — have the resources and vision to bring about such change. This has also seen many lives saved across these adoptions of Apple Watch, integration through AI will become the next key element for the AI-powered doctor.

Now imagine asking your iPhone why you have these sorts of symptoms-big headache, fatigue, or dizziness? The doctor will ask a couple of other questions and give a prescription or, in some cases, run some tests. Follow-ups will be done in a few weeks or maybe in a couple of months, and some of the same questions and tests will be repeated.

Now, imagine an AI-powered and easier variation. It can monitor the patient in the background and prompt the doctor when there is anything further to check on. Your iPhone will catch anything early, hopefully boost the chances for a complete recovery with your doctor, rather than waiting until you identify the problem-like and wonder what it could be.

Key features I would want from Apple AI Doctor

And secondly, for me, the ideal form for Apple AI-owned Doctor will not be that it replaces your current healthcare provider but improves the way you communicate and work together with your doctor on issues related to your health. There’s not really much into details of what the Apple AI Doctor is going to do, but after spending a considerable amount of time in the medical system as a patient, I can think of a few features that I hope Apple works on.

First, I want to see that my doctor can automatically view all the information held in Apple Health app. Weight should average my daily recording in medical record, not a statistic derived from some arbitrary moment. My blood pressure, blood glucose, and EKG readings will mean so much more to doctors and consultants if they can get it from my Apple Watch.

Another thing I want is to ask the AI Doctor health questions verbally. According to reports, the entire revamp of Health app revolves around food intake and, as a patient with diabetes, being able to ask an AI about the effects of specific foods, activities or habits could literally change how one has viewed his health over time.

3. Lastly, I want this AI from Apple to be linked up to diabetic applications, because diabetes above all has been the biggest health problem I ever faced. Even though I have it under control, it caused damage to my heart when it attacked, and diabetes is certainly the silent killer, and I’d love to have Apple Health+ at the point of my doctor available all over the clock.

But the one thing I want to see as a part of launch is that feature with an all evidence from every application, especially if it could help in the future improve self-care for diabetics. Although I drive long distances, I cannot ask Siri about my blood sugar when driving. I must be careful that my blood sugar doesn’t crash while I’m driving during long trips and how I time stopping for food aligns with freeway services. I have to do it manually while or before driving, but I’d really like to ask AI when it thinks I’ll need to eat.

It is unclear what Apple AI Doctor will do exactly-and whether the company will even roll it out-but it could really change the approach in our healthcare management, having AI Doctor always in your pocket. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how this pans out, as a patient, and how I can integrate it with my health.
