Your time could be greatly reduced by generative AI, especially ChatGPT. It’s perfect for drafting letters, making notes, and many other things. Can AI create podcasts, though? What occurs when a podcast screenplay is written by ChatGPT? The crew behind MakeUseOf’s programme decided to use ChatGPT to script an edition of the show in order to find out.

Why ChatGPT Was Used for a Podcast Script

Considering that ChatGPT 3.5 was released, generative AI has gained a lot of attention. It made sense to find a fresh angle on the subject since ChatGPT and other types of AI have been frequently addressed on MakeUseOf’s Really Useful Podcast. In the end, generative AI has the ability to be an effective instrument for reducing labour costs.

Although there have been concerns raised about risks to the creative sectors, in my opinion, this is an instrument that can help rather than hurt them. Additionally, it presents an intriguing task for AI. It’s one thing to create a script, but can generative AI “write” something engaging or will it sound uninteresting?

Podcast with ChatGPT

The audio team, which consists of me, Christian Cawley, the site’s editor in chief, Ben Stegner, and Tech Explained editor Gavin Phillips, thought that it might be fascinating to use the technology to script a podcast in order to frame a new discussion of ChatGPT.

Adding ChatGPT to the Truly Beneficial Podcast Format

The Really Useful Podcast features explainers, tips and techniques, suggestions, and tech news that impacts everyone (such as upgrades to social media, problems with online security, new iPhone or Android releases, etc.).

As you can see, this is a lot more difficult than, say, a programme that recounts a narrative or talks about celebrity gossip. It was quickly apparent that the crew would encounter some difficulties in adapting ChatGPT to the show’s structure.

The script, which is typically created with just an outline of connections, would provide us with the strongest framework to date. It was worth it to add something to the inventory of things to do with ChatGPT, even though doing so ran the risk of having the final result sound very different from every other show.

Three restrictions on ChatGPT’s ability to write scripts

ChatGPT has a number of constraints that were discovered when trying to formulate the directions that would result in a useful script.

1. Topical Writing Cannot Be Done

Topical writing is inappropriate for ChatGPT 3.5. The flaw here is apparent because it was trained on a sample that only included data up to September 2021.

This meant that the news segment of the Really Useful Podcast would continue to be chatty. Instead, ChatGPT would be used to construct the section’s opening.

2. ChatGPT Fails to Comprehend

Editors may encounter difficulties with generative AI because not all journals are using it to replace authors. The cause? Well, it doesn’t provide the same level of understanding that a human writer can bring to an explanation, a guide, or a collection of instructions.

As we were working with ChatGPT to prepare for this show, it became clear that asking it to reinterpret the articles we would use for our explainers, tips, and techniques segment would produce dialogue that wasn’t entirely accurate. Once more, the answer was to use ChatGPT only for the podcast’s middle section’s opening.

3. ChatGPT does not advise

ChatGPT is unable to provide advice on how to lessen litigation claims. In fact, it provided the following response to the initial request to “introduce a podcast section on recommending technology”:

Although different approaches were made, they all essentially produced the same reaction. Unfazed, the podcast was taped with a condensed form of this “script.”

4. What Happened with the ChatGPT Scripted Podcast

Both Ben Stegner and I needed a duplicate of the screenplay in order to record our AI-created episode of the Really Useful Podcast. Responses from ChatGPT were copied and pasted into a collaborative Google Doc to make this.

Should You Write a Podcast Using ChatGPT?

I’ve reached a few findings after writing as much of this episode using ChatGPT as I could. Most significantly, ChatGPT excels at outlining, as it does with many other textual applications of generative AI. It comprehends forms and can provide you with a working framework. ChatGPT is inappropriate for suggestions, analysis, and current information. It is pointless to request any conversation or writing along these lines.

Finally, the vocabulary used in ChatGPT varies fairly well. There is some duplication, and some of the results can be excessively drawn out and lengthy. Overall, though, it generates sufficient substance for use, even if you have to trim some of it.

As a result, it’s worthwhile investing some time in developing some cues if you’re considering using ChatGPT to script your show. Having said that, I don’t anticipate using it again anytime soon on the Really Useful Podcast.
